About Bioactive Folic Acid

Folic Acid (a.k.a. folate, or vitamin B-9) is a vitamin that performs many important tasks while it is in its activated form, L-5-Methyl-tetrahydrofolate. Along with vitamins B-2, B-6 and B-12 it’s required for the methylation of amino acids, converting them to new proteins, detoxifying artery-damaging homocysteine, controlling growth and reproduction of cells, and supporting the production  of hemoglobin.

While the liver is capable of storing excess folate for up to 9 months, this backup system is dependent upon high regular dietary intake of unprocessed foods and does not take into account biochemical individuality variations among the population. n Dietary folate is obtained almost exclusively from plants, and once absorbed much of it is converted into L-5-methyl-tetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF). It is only with the help of vitamins B-3, B-12 and C that this conversion can occur so that this active version of folate can complete the full roster of its vital responsibilities in the body. That is why PureLab’s Slow-Release BioActive Folate caps contain 1 milligram (1000 micrograms) of already activated folate as L-5-MTHF, so that more consistent blood levels can be achieved and vital metabolic functions performed.
